DDDDEEEESSSSCCCCRRRRIIIIPPPPTTTTIIIIOOOONNNN
_mmmm_oooo_rrrr_eeee is a filter that displays the contents of a file on the terminal,
one screenful at a time. After each screenful _mmmm_oooo_rrrr_eeee prints a prompt and
pauses awaiting user commands. The prompt usually contains the name of
the file and an indication (percentage) of the current location within
the file.
_mmmm_oooo_rrrr_eeee scrolls up to display one more line in response to a RETURN
character; it displays another screenful in response to a SPACE
character. Other commands are listed below.
When used to move to a specific line (by line number or pattern search)
the target line is displayed as the third line from the top of the
display. If it lies within the last screen then that final screen is
displayed.
_pppp_aaaa_gggg_eeee functions identically to _mmmm_oooo_rrrr_eeee.
If the standard output is not a terminal, _mmmm_oooo_rrrr_eeee acts just like _cccc_aaaa_tttt(1V).
OOOOPPPPTTTTIIIIOOOONNNNSSSS
The _mmmm_oooo_rrrr_eeee has the following options:
_----_cccc Clear before displaying. Redrawing the screen instead of
scrolling for faster displays. This option is ignored if the
terminal does not have the ability to clear to the end of a
line.
_----_dddd Display error messages rather than ringing the terminal bell
if an unrecognized command is used. This is helpful for
inexperienced users.
_----_eeee Exit immediately at the end of input. By default _mmmm_oooo_rrrr_eeee waits
at the end of the last screen.
_----_iiii Ignore case when performing pattern searches.
_----_ffff Do not fold long lines. This is useful when lines contain
nonprinting characters or escape sequences, such as those
generated when _nnnn_rrrr_oooo_ffff_ffff(1) output is piped through _uuuu_llll(1).
PPPPaaaaggggeeee 1111
mmmmoooorrrreeee((((1111)))) mmmmoooorrrreeee((((1111))))
_----_nnnn _l_i_n_e_s Use a screen of the indicated size rather than the default.
The lines displayed will be one less than this number.
_----_pppp _p_o_s_n The _p_o_s_n string is a positioning command which is executed at
the start of each input file. Examples are line numbers and
pattern searches.
_----_rrrr Normally, _mmmm_oooo_rrrr_eeee ignores control characters that it does not
interpret in some way. The _----_rrrr option causes these to be
displayed as _^^^^_C where _C stands for any such control
character.
_----_ssss Squeeze. Replace multiple blank lines with a single blank
line. This is helpful when viewing _nnnn_rrrr_oooo_ffff_ffff(1) output.
_----_tttt _t_a_g Start output with the screen containing the specified tag.
_----_uuuu Suppress generation of underlining escape sequences.
Normally, _mmmm_oooo_rrrr_eeee handles underlining, such as that produced by
_nnnn_rrrr_oooo_ffff_ffff(1), in a manner appropriate to the terminal. If the
terminal can perform underlining or has a stand-out mode,
_mmmm_oooo_rrrr_eeee supplies appropriate escape sequences.
_----_xxxx _t_a_b_s Change the tabstop from 8 to _t_a_b_s.
_----_NNNN By default line numbers are remembered by _mmmm_oooo_rrrr_eeee, this option
disables the line number facility which can slow down access
to very large files.
_++++_////_p_a_t_t_e_r_n Start output two lines above the line containing the regular
expression _p_a_t_t_e_r_n. This pattern does _n_o_t end with a `_////'; a
trailing slash is interpreted as a character in the search
pattern.
_----_l_i_n_e_s Display the indicated number of _l_i_n_e_s in each screenful (see
_----_nnnn _l_i_n_e_s).
_++++_l_i_n_e_n_u_m_b_e_r Start output at _l_i_n_e_n_u_m_b_e_r.

_mmmm_oooo_rrrr_eeee uses the terminal's _tttt_eeee_rrrr_mmmm_cccc_aaaa_pppp(5) entry to determine its display
characteristics. Environment variables modify this behaviour which may
be further altered by command line options.
_EEEE_DDDD_IIII_TTTT_OOOO_RRRR Specify the editor command to invoke (see _vvvv command), the
default is _vvvv_iiii(1).
_CCCC_OOOO_LLLL_UUUU_MMMM_NNNN_SSSS Specify screen width.
PPPPaaaaggggeeee 2222
mmmmoooorrrreeee((((1111)))) mmmmoooorrrreeee((((1111))))
_LLLL_IIII_NNNN_EEEE_SSSS Specify screen length (depth).
_MMMM_OOOO_RRRR_EEEE Specify preset command line options. For instance, to page
through files using the _----_cccc mode by default, set the value of
this variable to _----_cccc. When _mmmm_oooo_rrrr_eeee is invoked any command line
options are processed after those of the _MMMM_OOOO_RRRR_EEEE environment
variable.
CCCCoooommmmmmmmaaaannnnddddssss
Single character commands take effect immediately; _mmmm_oooo_rrrr_eeee does not expect a
carriage return character. Multi-character commands are echoed on the
prompt line as they are typed.
In the following commands, _i is an optional numerical argument.
_hhhh Show command help information.
_i_ffff
_i_^^^^_FFFF
_iSPACE
_i_zzzz Display next screenful, or _i lines.
_i_dddd
_i_^^^^_DDDD Display next half-screen, or _i lines. If _i is specified it
becomes the new half-screen scroll value.
_i_jjjj
_iRETURN Display next line, or _i lines.
_i_bbbb
_i_^^^^_BBBB Display previous screenful, or _i lines.
_i_uuuu
_i_^^^^_UUUU Display previous half-screen, or _i lines. If _i is specified
it becomes the new half-screen scroll value.
_i_jjjj Display previous line, or _i lines.
_i_ssss Skip 1 line forward, or _i lines.
_i_gggg Skip to the beginning of the file, or _ith line.
_i_GGGG Skip to the end of the file, or _ith line.
_i_%%%%
_i_pppp Skip to beginning of the file, or _i per cent into the file.
This command does not work when reading from a pipeline.
_rrrr
_^^^^_LLLL Refresh the screen.

mmmmoooorrrreeee((((1111)))) mmmmoooorrrreeee((((1111))))
_RRRR Refresh the screen and flush buffered input if reading from a
pipeline.
_mmmm_l_e_t_t_e_r Attach a mark, named as _l_e_t_t_e_r (lower case letter), to the
current line in the file.
_''''_l_e_t_t_e_r Return to the mark named by _l_e_t_t_e_r.
_''''_'''' Return to the place in the file at which the last positioning
command was issued.
_====
_^^^^_GGGG
_::::_ffff Display details of the current location in the file.
_i_////_p_a_t_t_e_r_n Search forward for the next (or _ith) occurrence of the
regular expression _p_a_t_t_e_r_n. Display the screenful starting
two lines before the line that contains the match for the
regular expression _p_a_t_t_e_r_n. The previous search _p_a_t_t_e_r_n is
used if the current command omits it. If _p_a_t_t_e_r_n is prefixed
with a ! (exclamation mark) then the search is negated, that
is, it locates lines which do not match _p_a_t_t_e_r_n.
_i_????_p_a_t_t_e_r_n As for _i_////_p_a_t_t_e_r_n but the search starts toward the start of
the file (backwards).
_i_nnnn Repeat the last search command.
_i_NNNN Repeat the last search but reverse the direction.
_::::_eeee_f_i_l_e_n_a_m_e
_EEEE_f_i_l_e_n_a_m_e Display new file. If _f_i_l_e_n_a_m_e is omitted _m_o_r_e returns to the
original file. A _f_i_l_e_n_a_m_e of _#### is requested _m_o_r_e returns to
the previously displayed file.
_i_::::_nnnn Display the next (or _ith next) filename given on the command
line.
_i_::::_pppp
_i_PPPP Display the previous (or _ith previous) filename given on the
command line.
_::::_aaaa List the filenames given on the command line.
_i_::::_tttt_t_a_g Display the file and line named by _t_a_g.
_vvvv Start the editor indicated by the _EEEE_DDDD_IIII_TTTT_OOOO_RRRR environment variable
with current file. If the editor is _eeee_xxxx(1) or _vvvv_iiii(1) editing
will start at the current line. The default editor is _vvvv_iiii(1).
Exiting the editor resumes _mmmm_oooo_rrrr_eeee.

when used within _c_o_m_m_a_n_d are replaced with the current
filename and the previous shell command, respectively. If
there is no current filename, _%%%% is not expanded. Prepend a
backslash to these characters to escape expansion.

A few old IRIX features do not exist in the current XPG4 version.
The -l and -w options have been dropped (incompatible with XPG4).
The v edit command defaults to vi(1) and not ed(1).
The z command does not change the size of the screen if given a count.
The single-quote command clashes with XPG4 commands which replace it.
If stderr is not readable more will exit with an error message; it will
not try to use /dev/tty instead.
Headers are no longer printed when stdout is not a tty.
There is no overlap between forward or backward paging.
The CTRL-\ sequence does not interrupt processing.
